FAQs

Where do you work?

Based in Victoria, BC. Remote-first, with on-site work available by arrangement across BC and Canada.

What types of clients do you work with?

Hardware and industrial teams—startups through established organizations—who need help with integration, test readiness, verification evidence, reliability, or failure recovery.

What’s the fastest way to start?

Send a short description of the problem, what “done” looks like, and any deadlines. I’ll propose a scope, timeline, and price range within 1–2 business days.

Do you offer fixed-price or day-rate?

Both. Most engagements are fixed-scope/fixed-fee (preferred). For uncertain scope, we use a capped day-rate with written checkpoints.

What are your minimums?

TRR Sprint: from $3.5k

V&V Documentation Sprint: from $6.5k

Fractional Chief Engineer: from $2.8k/month (monthly minimum)

Larger integration work typically starts at $18k+ (scope-dependent)

What are your payment terms?

Projects: 50% to reserve, 25% mid-point, 25% on delivery (Net 15).
Retainers: prepaid monthly.

What’s a typical timeline?

TRR Sprint: 5–10 business days

V&V Documentation Sprint: 10–20 business days (depends on inputs)

Fractional support: 30-day minimum, typically 3–6 months

Integration work: often 4–8 weeks depending on maturity and access

How do change orders work?

Material scope changes are quoted as add-ons or billed at $200–$240/hr, only with written approval.

Who owns the IP and data?

You own deliverables produced under the SOW. Joa Aero Engineering retains pre-existing methods, templates, and know-how (background IP). NDAs are welcome.

Can you stamp engineering documents?

P.Eng. stamping is available where applicable and permitted under the relevant provincial regulations and scope of practice.

Are you insured / safe for on-site work?

Yes. EHS-compliant. WorkSafeBC registered. Commercial General Liability + Professional Liability. COI available on request.

Do you work with export-controlled or defense programs?

Case-by-case. The client confirms classification and provides required authorizations/permits. I’ll confirm constraints up front before starting.

Do you do drone inspections?

Yes—Transport Canada–compliant UAV operations, with engineering-style findings (defect map, risk ranking, and prioritized next actions).

What do you need from us to be effective?

Access to the current specs/requirements (even if messy), test plans/procedures (if applicable), stakeholders for quick interviews, and clarity on acceptance criteria or decision points.

What does “success” look like in your engagements?

One of these outcomes:

- test window is protected (TRR issues closed before execution)

- acceptance is defensible (V&V evidence pack is complete and traceable)

- repeat failures stop (root cause + corrective actions validated)

- delivery is controlled (interfaces owned, risks tracked, decisions documented)

What are your service levels (retainers)?

Business-hours response within 24 hours. Optional on-call add-on available (4-hour blocks; faster response by arrangement).

What’s your cancellation / rescheduling policy?

If cancelled ≥10 business days before start: full deposit refund.
If cancelled <10 business days: 25% scheduling fee.
